The most important thing in judging a black and white print is learning to judge contrast. Many reproduction companies do not pay attention to contrast, so if your photographer gives you a perfect print, and it gets reproduced wrong you could get stuck with a lot of crummy reproductions that do not represent you.

If the whole print looks grey and there are no crisp whites and blacks with a wide range of grey tones, the print lacks contrast. If there is a lack of grey and the blacks are too dense you have a print that is too contrasty.

The most important thing to remember, as you are judging your prints and reproductions, is that your headshot needs to look like you. If your print is too light and does not adequately show your facial features then you are giving a false impression of what you look like. There are many actors with headshots that make them look younger or older than they are. These actors waste a lot of time going to auditions for parts that they do not get cast for because casting directors are calling them in based on their headshot.
